Creating Course Home Pages

Course Home Pages are needed

Course Home pages will be created by users, because they are comfortable structures and the topic-based article + course pagelist strategy (however wise) will feel unfamiliar. The result will be chaotic creation of course home pages (chaotic naming) and also users over time discover the conflicts and confusions of different offerings of the course, leading readerst to ask if the 'ECON 101' page is about this semester's lectures by Keynes or last year's by Adam Smith. The following was drafted in the development wiki, and there are three associated templates in the development wiki to support these instructions

Main Page for all offerings of Course

Course home pages should be named using the Registrar's conventions to make them organize well in the Indexes. For example, to describe Econ 101, all sections, use (Note no spaces in name):

ECON_101

Course home pages are general pages for all offerings of a course. They provide general resources and have links to specific section offerings of the course. Copy and edit this text as the skeleton to create a Course Home Page

{{Template:CourseHomePage | CourseTitle=Introduction to Macro-economics | CoursePrefix=ECON | CourseNumber=101}}

...put general introduction information here...

==Links to specific offerings of this Course==

{{Template:CourseSectionLink | CoursePrefixAndNumber=ECON_101 | SectionNumber=01 | Term=F05 | Campus=Pullman | Instructor=Keyens}}

==General Resources==
===Bibliography===
===People and Groups===
===Multimedia Materials===

The Create the page by URL method works well for making these pages. Copy the template text above before following that procedure, and paste the text on the resulting page.

Page for a specific section/offering

The easy way to create, and properly name, a page for a specific offering of a course is to go to the Course Home Page (the general page described above) and insert a template to create a link to a specific offering. Then, follow that link and the page will be created. The text to add is:

{{Template:CourseSectionLink | CoursePrefixAndNumber=ECON_101 | SectionNumber=01 | Term=F05 | Campus=Pullman | Instructor=Keynes}}

CourseSectionHomePages also have a recommended template at the top, listed below:

{{Template:CourseSectionHomePage | CoursePrefixAndNumber=ECON_101 | Instructor=Keynes}}

Course Home Pages are not needed

The concept of using Categories to collect wiki articles and using the Category page as the course 'page' makes a point about courses really being about topics and works toward the de-siloization of the course content Nils Peterson 15:07, 19 Aug 2005 (Pacific Daylight Time)
