Definition of an Interest Group

Interest Groups in WSU Wiki are a mechanism for finding people and sharing resources. An Interest Group is a collection of people (and resources) around a topic, for the purposes of mutual learning, practice, or support. Groups might be formal registered student organizations, informal clubs, or not organized in any way.

A current list of Interest Groups can be found here: Category:Interest_Groups

Step by Step How-to

The granddaddy of interest groups in WSU Wiki, and the way we discovered them, is Using_WSU_Wiki. This page lists articles about using WSU Wiki, and people who are interested in the use of WSU Wiki.

Decide on a Name

Before proceeding, browse the existing interest groups to see if your group already exists (if so, skip to step 2).

What is the name of the group? Perhaps there is an official name of a registered student organization (AAPI), or a topical name (soccer), or a name of a specific product, service, or resource (Using WSU Wiki).

Convert the name to something suitable for a WSU Wiki category. Specifically, replace spaces with underscore ("_") and drop or replace amperands (&).

Declare your interest in the group

 1. In the banner of WSU Wiki, locate your WSU Network ID. Click it, and edit the page.
 2. Add the name of the Interest Group, e.g., to your page.
 3. You can optionally create an ad for the group, add this to your page:
 4. Save

Describe the Group and Link it

If you just completed the step above, scroll down your page, look for "Category" at the bottom.

 1. If this is a new category, the link will be red. If its an existing category, it will be blue.
 2. Click it to see the Category page, if the page is new, you will be in edit mode. If not, choose Edit.
 3. Say something about this Interest Group to attract others.
 4. Important, add to the page.
 5. Save.

Advertise your group, Invite members

 1. Advertise your group with the URL you see on the Category Page, or find/make another page in the WSU Wiki for your group, and add the groups' category to that page (e.g., on the basket weaving page add ) and advertise the URL of that page.
 2. Invite others to add your group's Category (e.g., ) to their page to join your group.

Add Resources to your Group

Your group can be more than a list of people, it can have wiki pages as resources. Create or find other pages in WSU Wiki that are of interest to your group. Add your groups Category tag to the pages.
