Testing should be approached very systematically and with a clearly defined procedures. Nearly all types of tests that can be performed such as wear testing, hardness testing, ect. have specifications which need to be followed in order to make relevent and adequate comparisons to standardized data. ASTM Standards for various procedures can be found both online and in the ASM handbooks. Information is widely available for these standards and should always be the basis for experimental design.

Analysis of the acquired data from testing is also a very important aspect which frequently becomes overlooked. After performing a testing procedure care should be taken to represent the gathered data in a way that coincides the standard data presentation style.
