Group Dynamics

Towards the beginning of the 416 class everybody takes a personality exam which defines (theoretically)who they are in a group dynamic. However, this test is not completely accurate and by no means does somebody have to feel responsible to assume that role. Groups are all about compromise and everybody contributing an equal amount. Some people use this 416 group as an opportunity to get a job and will do everything they can to take control of the project. However, just because they do not have a job lined up, does not mean they have the right to take all the credit. In essence, you will get what you want out of this project based on how much you care about it. If you want somebody to become the driver, then strap in and get ready for the ride. But if you want to be the liason or do something, speak up and let your voice be heard. I guess this article is directed towards those really aggressive-minded people who always want to lead, don't be selfish, its a "group" project! Just know that what goes around comes back around, so whoever you stepped on when you were on your way to the top may end up being your boss someday!

Another issue deals with effort and timeline. This is not an easy ticket to graduation because you are in a group with a bunch of over-achievers! Do not take advantage of people because you know that they will pick up the slack. Just know when you get out in the industry, your company will be pissed because they invested in a slacker. With all of that aside, its a good idea to start making progress on your project immediately. Do not leave it till the end because you will not finish. In this class you either get an A or and F, remember that!

Here is a fitting analogy. ME 416 is the big league. Do not bring little league skill to a big league game. If you do, ride the pine and hope to avoid getting beaned.
