Following standard engineering practices protects both the public and the engineer from faulty or dangerous designs. If a product you design fails for any reason you as an engineer may be protected by proof of your process. Whenever designing a system, keep the following considerations in mind:
Ethics Checklist:
- Results communicated fairly and honestly.
- Conclusions backed up with engineering evidence (calculations, drawings, etc.)
- Applicable codes, standards and laws considered. (Including electronic components and factor of safety.)
- Safety considered in design of system or device. (Directed at correct audience.)
- Failure modes considered for life-cycle of system.
- Engineering practice documented in logs, Basecamp or notebooks providing proof of process.
- Ergonomics and maintainability of system considered.
- Societal/envoronmental implications of design considered.
When buying food or ordering a hotel, do not splurge and use your expense account as a personal vacation. The reason for traveling is to do business. For instance, if you're meeting with your company on Friday, do not rent the hotel for Friday and Saturday night as well; have lunch and go home! Money wasted on useless expenses is not available for projects that need it.
