Throughout the majority of these articles, there is little to no departure from the attitude that sport serves a pure function, and never addresses its ability to serve as a vessel for other topics. With respect to history and function of sport, there is no investigation into the need for sport by members of society to provide money, opportunity, and purpose. The article on the topic of sportsmanship is one example of this mentality in the writing. The author states that leisure activities are used as avenues for recognition, but does not examine how sport is used to break cultural, political, and social lines. There are basic definitions and abstracts about sport, but no regard to the psychological motivations of sport that descends from a history of poverty, social separation, and need. These articles have touched only the surface when it comes to how sport has developed into a sub-culture in America and the world that is obvious today. Further discussions need to be made on the subject of economics, self-esteem, and survival and sport’s role in these issues.
