We launched a university-wide blog in Aug 2004 as a student learning resource and are now exploring strategies to encourage webbing, annotation and socially leveraged discovery among web resources. Ideas behind four tools are weaving themselves into a strategy to enhance our blog environment. When blog posts are interlinked, its not easy to visualize or navigate the resulting web. We have done preliminary exploration of URL mapping of blog posts, but lack a mechanism to export the XML required by VUE. Granular addressibility offers the potential to enhance linking by placing anchor tags at specific points in a web page. We have a preliminary implementation of PurpleSlurple deployed within the blog tool which facilitates linking among posts. Blogging is a way of associating metadata with an arbitrary URL. Other resources might also be associated with an arbitrary URL and the Wikalong Firefox extension answers that by providing a wiki page for any URL. The reader of notes in Wikalong's wiki can not leverage that discovery to other related citations. Del.icio.us, a social bookmark managment tool, allows discovery of related citations. Deployed as a backend to Wikalong, Del.icio.us can allow multiple authors to annotate an arbitrary URL and readers of that URL to discovery additional related citations.

1. VUE (Tufts University) A map of URL links among blog posts. Arcs are labled to show the relationship the blog author saw in making the link.

2. PurpleSlurple (PurpleSlurple.com) Granular addressability of content on an arbitrary web page supports precise linking and reference among pages. PurpleSlurple re-processed the page prior to display.

3. Wilaong (Wikalong.org) Using Firefox, Wikalong associates a wiki page with the hash of the URL of the page being viewed. This allows association of a wiki resource with an arbitrary URL. The Wikalong engine can support other back ends besides the wiki supplied.

4. Del.icio.us (Del.icio.us) A social bookmark system that allows users to collect, annotate, and tag a URL. View this as associating user-specific resources with an arbitrary URL. This figure shows Del.icio.us as a backend for Wikalong.
