eHRAF - Online collection of ethnography studies. This database has very authoritative information from first-hand anthropological studies. Of particular interest may be this article on West Bengali women:

Introduction to second Indian impression: Some contemporary issues in context / Fruzzetti, Lina M.

Abstract: This is new introduction to the second Indian impression of Fruzzetti's 'Gift of a Virgin' (see document no. 23). She discusses how the commoditization of Indian society has impacted negatively on women's rights and status, in the most extreme circumstances leading to dowry deaths, in which brides are brutalized in an effort to exact higher dowry payments.

Other Indian ethnic groups covered in eHRAF include: Andamans, Badaga, Garo, Khasi, Lepcha, Santal, Sherpa
