How can I create a good assignment that students will understand?
You should articulate the purpose of the assignment, the outcome(s), describe the task itself and any guidelines for completing the task(s), how to measure success in the assignment, and what resources are available for the assignment.

Call roll every day until you get it!
Look at student and say his/her name. Make an association between the name and the face.
Use a digital camera and take a picture of each student (and label it).
