Metric
A metric is a measurable variable assigned to a customer need. Usually the enginering unit is included in the metric matrix, although some metrics may simply reference an engineering document(such as AISI standard). Similar to the needs matrix, the metric matrix is rated from 1 to 5. 5 is usually the highest, although this varies. To begin your metric start with a need, simplify it into a physical thing, and assign a unit for it. The following is an example of a metric:
| Need No. | Customer Need | Reference | Importance |
| 1 | Recharchable Battery | Craig Johnson | 5 |
- ... The corresponding metric could be:
| Metric No. | Need No. | Metrics | Importance | Units |
| 1 | 1 | Power | 5 | Watt |
