Librarians' Wiki Group
From wsuwiki
This page is to help track information, project updates, questions and issues by WSU Librarians using the WSU Wiki. Librarians are encouraged to consult this page as they are considering new projects, creating pages, and exploring editing issues of the Wiki.

May 2007 Rundown (10:30 Terrell lab)
Here's a link to all the pages tagged with the WSULibraries category.
- Chris' modeling project on DVD. A project of the English 356 - a self guided tour of the Holland / Terrell library. This was created with the software Maya. We will try to make this available soon so that everyone can view this. Chris also talked about an open source version of software.
- Notice the Freshman Focus Flu page. Librarians involved with Freshman Focus could use the Wiki to document ideas for research and topics. Instructional faculty are welcome to use the page too, of course!
- There have been some library-related updates on other pages, such as a list of podcasts done mostly by Betty, Mark, and Alex. A similar list of RSS Feeds sponsored by the Libraries can be found here. The really cool thing about both of these projects is that they have intersected, and we now have an RSS Feed of podcasts by the WSU Libraries.
- Another new development is the implementation of RSS feeds into Blackboard for courses.
There seems to be a number of library-related Wiki pages that aren't tagged with the WSULibraries category. If you run across any of these and think of it, try to add the category tag so that we can keep track of what we're putting up. Some of these are Libraries EARWG, Libraries T-Shirt2007 page, etc.
Discussion Issues on November 15, 2006 (10:30 Terrell lab)
We had an informal lunch & discussion time.
Updates:
Emerging Technology Group - the proposal hasn't come forth.
MySpace -
Facebook is only for individuals.
[[Podcasting]] - Write your script and note pauses, give cues to your listener. Allow time for this. Let a student to it and get suggestions.
Use program called "Audacity" on the computer. One of these is in the map room in Owen, and the other is Skillsoft training room in MMR. The room in Terrell has an Outlook menu that can be used to reserve the room.
In Audacity, a new audio file screen comes up. Click start. Begin recording your script. You can see the audio file as it develops. Anytime you stop the audio file, it starts a "new track" which will have different tonal quality than the previous track you created. If you make a mistake, hit the pause button and then re-record the entire section and come back later to edit. This will avoid creating a "new track."
When you finish your input, use the STOP button. Then you can go back and edit the file. Audio is not forgiving. Mistakes really stand out. In editing, you can delete small sections. You can remove background noise, but the process is a bit complex. You can amplify your voice during the editing process.
You can smooth out noises and voices; put in "white space" so there is no noise at any point.
After editing, save as an Audacity file. You will have a 1) data file and 2) .aud file. You need both of these. .AUD files can be copied and pasted as a new audio file if you need to edit the file after it has been saved.
Lastly, save the .aud file as an .mp3 file. Then the file can be put on a server. We haven't incorporated this .mp3 files into other applications (Powerpoint, Viewlets, etc.) yet. This is the next step.

Currently we have podcasts for Search It! We will be creating an interview file with the donor of the Owen bear.

What should be a podcast? What should go in a blog?
Discussion Issues for August 16, 2006 (10:30 Terrell lab)
Updates: Over the summer, Librarians' Wiki Group has decided to focus on the broader issues of Web 2.0 and refer to ourselves more as an "Emerging Technology" group. For logistical reasons, we are keeping the Wiki listserv and keep using the Librarians' Wiki page here. We can add information about any 2.0 projects to the WSU Wiki for others to access. Some of us reviewed materials from the page linked from the WSU Web 2.0 page. The Web 2.0 has a nice index linking to other WSU Wiki pages focusing on specific applications.
Items to discuss:
MySpace: Setting up a MySpace account for the WSU Libraries. Is this a task for us? the WWG? Beth Lindsay posted information from a librarian listserv where other libraries discusssed the pros and cons of setting up an account. Some libraries already have a presence on MySpace: Hennepin County Library, the New Castle-Henry County Public Library, and the Fort Meyers Public Library (complete with some kind of rap song that starts playing when you load the page.) Cindy Kaag supports this being done -- I think she wants to use a Beastie Boys song as our theme. (just kidding).
Design Team: According to Steve Borrelli, the Libraries' Design Team will be using the WSU Wiki to post information about conferences and design team principles. There may be some folks from the DT at the meeting to talk about this.
Open Discussion : Have you been working on something cool, or do you have some new idea you'd like the group to explore and discuss? Bring it to the meeting and we can talk about it.
Librarians' Emerging Technology Group : Do we need some sort of loose group statement about what we are and what we do? This group was originally formed as a kind of "study group" to talk about Wiki and technology issues. Do we to stay fuzzy and undefined or become more formal - or just wait and see?
Discussion Issues for March 16, 2006
1. Nils Peterson will attend this month's meeting to help with discussion of several items. Nils has noted: "We are making a page on CTLT website: Bibs on S of T&L and want that page to go to a Wiki Category page. We are already imagining several sources of bibs that might join the category. What we are hoping is to find a partner in Libraries who might contribute either bibliographic entries or "wiki gardening" on other bib pages."
2. In addition, I think we need to think about how we want to use the Wiki in the future. Do we want to keep adding short generic "research guides," for each new project we work on, or is there a way we can consolidate some of our efforts into a more central guide and make use of the Wiki's ability to use templates? Templates would be composed of a paragraph to half-page worth of material that we would want to use over and over - i.e. general instructions or information about the Libraries' site, ProQuest, Griffin, invisible web, etc. When the database changes, all we will need to do is to update the template and everything else that links to it will be updated automatically.
3. There are a few pages that essentially repeat parts of other pages. What should we do with these? We need some method of cross referencing - templates may help with this. For an example, see: > http://wiki.wsu.edu/index.php/Research_Child_Labor_Issues > http://wiki.wsu.edu/index.php/Chinese_Customs_Bibliography
We may want to assign some of these issues to a small task force or task forces to come back with recommendations? Think about it.
