FMC Food Tech DSI Portioning System Re-design (Spring 2007)

This project revolves around the DSI Portioning System and a few components that are failing health inspection standards due to corrosion or erosion. The standard is if there is any appearance of rust or pitting, then the part has to be replaced. This is because these areas of rust or pitting can harbor bacteria, which is not tolerated since the DSI Portioning System is used to precisely and quickly cut raw chicken via a 55,000psi water jet. Likewise, since these parts are within the food zone, bacteria could perhaps deflect back up towards the chicken and cause contamination. Thus, the purpose of this project is to find another metal (currently use 440c Stainless Steel) that will not corode (due to cleaning chemicals) or erode (due to the water jet) as fast as the metal that is currently being used.
