Can I use ArticleReach?

The ArticleReach (also spelled Article Reach) service is only available to Pullman campus users. This does include DDP students based out of the Pullman system, but this is not available to Tri-Cities, Vancouver, or Spokane; nor is it available to community users / alumni (i.e. you need to be actively WSU-affiliated - student, staff, faculty).

How does ArticleReach work?

If a journal or magazine title is not found in the Griffin Catalog you can request an article by selecting the ArticleReach option through the sfx.gif button, in the same way that you would select Interlibrary Loan as an option. You will be prompted to log in using your last name and Cougar Card number and the article will subsequently be sent electronically to the e-mail address you have on file with WSU. If an article is not available through ArticleReach a note will be sent to you to inquire if you would like to proceed with an Interlibrary Loan; if you choose to use Interlibrary Loan then in most cases you will incur a charge.

Besides WSU-Pullman, the university libraries involved in this pilot project include Michigan State University, University of Colorado at Boulder, University of Nebraska at Lincoln, University of Oregon, Washington University in St. Louis, and Wayne State University. The Center for Research Libraries will be participating as well.

How do I request an article?

When looking at an article reference in one of our databases, look for the sfx.gif button. Once you've clicked on that and determined that the article is not available either electronically or in print at WSU, you can click on ArticleReach to try to get your article.

How do I know if the article is available?

You don't have to know - if it's not available then you should receive an email back shortly asking if you want to attempt to get it via Interlibrary Loan instead. However, if you want to know... when you get into the blue ArticleReach interface, look for the "New Search" button in the upper right, and right click that to "open in a new window." Do a title search for your journal (note: search for the journal title, not for the article title)- if it's available at one of the schools we should be able to get it for you; if it's not, skip Article Reach and proceed directly to Interlibrary Loan.

What if I only have a print citation? Can I still use this?

You can still use this service. From the main WSU Library page, click on the Article Indexes / E-Journals tab in the middle. On that page, click on Citation Linker. This is the manual equivalent of the sfx.gif button - fill that out, click "Go", and then click on "Article Reach." Alternatively, as long as you're here: here is a direct link to ArticleReach.

How much does this cost?

Nothing - it's a free service!

How long does it take, then?

If the item is readily available then it is usually delivered within a day. However, if there are any problems with the citation or anything else it could be 2-4 work days, but definitely within work 5-7 days. If the item is unavailable then you should hear back in the same timeframe; so far "not available" notices seem to take about three work days.

How do I know when my article is ready? And how do I get it?

When your article is available, you will receive an email from ArticleReach containing a hyperlink to the article. Just follow the link in the email to view it - the link will remain active for 30 days.

You can also check on the status of your requests through the Libraries. Go to the main WSU Libraries web page, click on the "Griffin Catalog" tab, and then click on the "Log In" button in the upper left. Once you've logged in, look for the "Article Requests" link to the left - clicking on that will show you the status of all your requests.

I received an error message saying I must have an email address to use this service. Now what?

You need to have an email address on file with WSU to use the system. If you don't have one, you need first to contact IT at (509)335-4357 and have them add your WSU ID in the system. (Note: you can apparently do this online as well: Go to my WSU, move to "my Profile" from the menu on the left, and activate your WSU email address from there). It should be one work day or so before this update makes it to the library, so you'll either need to wait a day or so before trying again or else you'll also need to contact WSU Circulation, either in person at a library circulation desk or by phone at (509)335-5517. A second note: doing this only through the Libraries is insufficient - next time we update our records from WSU, if you haven't recorded your email with IT then the email that you gave the libraries will be erased, and if this happens before your article comes in, then we can't email it to you!

You didn't answer my other question!

Some generic all-participating-institutions Article Reach information is also available online. You can call us at (509)335-5517 and we'll be happy to answer any questions as soon as possible - if you think having your question asked (and answered) here would benefit others, feel free to post the question here on the wiki and we'll add our answers. This service is new as of Summer 2007 (and is on a one-year trial basis, and so may go away in Summer of 2008), and we're still trying to figure out what we don't know!
