Affordable Wines
From wsuwiki
| Hi everyone! This page is the result of Dr. Carolyn Ross's wine tasting panels. At the after party of a recent panel the group expressed a desire for a forum to discuss wines, particularly those that are reasonably priced and from Washington. Hopefully, with your help this page will soon be populated with many locally available reasonably priced wines. |

Wines under 10 dollars
Pine and Post is a Washington state wine that comes in several varieties and can usually be found around the five dollar range. (Co-op $5.00, Rite-Aid $4.00)
Pine and Post is very good. I like the CabSav better than the Merlot. I also really like the Yellow Tail Shiraz and the Shiraz-Grenache. There's a Covey Run Lemberger at the liquor store in Pullman that is very good. All under $10.00 and yummy.
I tried "Redwood" Merlot and it is pretty good for the price, 8$.99 for a large bottle at Rite Aid.
Columbia Crest Cabernet Sauvignon is my favorite low cost cab. It's priced between $6.00-$8.00 and is widely available at Safeway, Rite Aid, Washington State Liquor Store, and Dissmores. The 2003 vintage is being sold now and it has aged nicely.
Snoqualmie Riesling Winemakers Select has an almost late harvest sweetness and intensity. I like to drink it by itself and it goes well with foods that a riesling complements. It's price between $6.00-$8.00 at Rite Aid and Winco.
Friexinet Spumante is a sparkling wine that's mid-range between dry and sweet. It goes well by itself or with food. It's price $6.75 at the Old Post Office Wine Cellar.
Several J. Rieslings, including Chateau Ste. Michelle, Ste. Chapelle, and Hogue, are priced between $6.00-$8.00 and are widely available. All are good served with fish, chicken, or a salad.
Latah Creek Maywine sold at the Washington State Liquor Store during August, Washington Wine Month, is a lovely, light wine with a hint of strawberry and is priced at about $5.00 a bottle. It's nice served on a warm summer evening, or any time, for that matter.
Wines 10 to 20 dollars
Camas Prairie is based in downtown Moscow, ID. They make over a dozen varieties, we like the Merlot, I think it sells for about $17. They'll even let you design your own label for custom orders.
Whidbey's Port priced at $12.50 a bottle at the Washington State Liquor Store is absolutely fabulous, especially served with Cougar Gold Cheese. Ahhh heaven! It's our traditional New Year's Eve big splurge. Gee, it's just a few days from now.
Wine Press Northwest 2006 Platinum Judging: Best of the Best in the Great Northwest by Andy Purdue, editor-in-chief of Wine Press Northwest http://www.winepressnw.com/images/platinum06.pdf includes several wines priced under $20 dollars. The panel judged 247 wines from Washington State, Oregon, British Columbia and Idaho. Happy exploring!
