ASCE:Science/Career Day @ Sunnyside Elementary
From wsuwiki
Contents |
Who:
The President is the main correspondent with the elementary school contact. A teacher from Sunnyside might contact the ASCE office in the Spring, asking us if we wish to participate in their career day again. Otherwise, the President should contact the Principal at Sunnyside for information. All WSU chapter members are invited to participate in this activity at Sunnyside Elementary.
What:
ASCE volunteers introduce elementary students to civil engineering through planned activities. There are typically four sessions during the day where students rotate through different career choices they are interested in. Past activities include: building earth dams from sand, gravel, popsicle sticks, etc.; constructing structures out of toothpicks and marshmallows; building houses with LEGOs and testing them on a shake table. The shake table simulates an earthquake (the LEGOs/shake table can be borrowed from Dr. McLean). An ASCE volunteer usually gives a short talk at the end of the activity. This is followed by a brief discussion where students share what they learned from the activity and how it applies to civil engineering.
When:
One day in the Spring (annually).
Where:
Sunnyside Elementary in Pullman.
Why:
Introduces possible future civil engineers to our profession. The event is also very rewarding for the volunteers who participate.
