Adding a Question

Questions are stored on "pages." You can add them to any page, and reorder questions within a page. Questions can be moved between pages (and between surveys) with Copy/Paste.

Questions and Question Elements

Questions can have multiple "response elements." The term "Question" refers to the aggregate of all the elements. Questions can combine any number of elements, with blocks of text and pictures.

This "Question" has two response elements, the Choice (radio button) and the open-ended blank:

Which do you prefer:

  • written documentation
  • online documentation

Titles of Questions

Questions are required to have titles. Titles help authors refer to questions, and move them around during reordering. Question titles can (optionally) be shown to respondents.

Formatting the text in Questions

Question stems and leaves accept HTML tags. A WYSIWYG editor is planned.

Meta Data (Tagging) for Questions

Questions can have meta data assigned to them. This is intended to make searching for questions, and collaboration among authors simpler. A tool for faculty to find/add questions to an institutional delivered survery is planned, and metadata will be part of the search strategy.

Tags have two components: a key (e.g., technology) and a key value (e.g., ePortfolio). Among the tags to consider adding:

  • technology (e.g., eportfolio, clickers, email, whiteboard, course management system, ...).
  • activity (e.g., reflection on prior learning, peer instruction, presentation, ....)
  • respondent (to the survey): faculty, students, ....
  • office (of origin) (e.g., Flashlight Program, Institutional Research, self).

Because we don't (yet) have a thesaurus, it's often important to use more than one value for a key. For example, if the survey is designed for faculty, I might use key values such as "faculty" "teachers" and "instructors". For a technology such as "clickers", I might also use 'student response system, ' 'personal response system,' and 'PRS' as key values.
