How do I 'start' or administer a survey?

This system has been designed to create tailored response forms for different groups of respondents. So, even if you want all respondents to see the same questions, you begin with the button that, at this date (May 2009) is called "respondents". It's on the survey's home page. This is where you'll find a surprising number of controls: which questions your respondents will see is controlled by metadata entered here, as well as any tailoring of the text. You decide here whether all respondents in the pool get the same URL or whether each respondent is assigned a unique URL (which makes it possible to send reminders only to people who have not yet responded, for example). You can make these URLs available at any time (even before there are any questions) and, once the URL goes to the respondent, they can respond. Unlike some other systems, there is no 'activation' step; surveys are 'live' from the moment they are created.

What's the most frequently made mistake?

At this date (May 2009), the easiest mistake to make is probably the process of adding metadata manually (i.e., without a spreadsheet). The first step is easy: you write in the key and value. The error comes in then clicking "save." In the current interface, you must first click "add" (sometimes symbolized with a green plus). Then key and value will then appear in the field of metadata. And THEN you click "save." This is a mistake that even veteran authors continue to make. It's an easy mistake to overlook because, when you save using the current interface, it closes the window. So, believing you have successfully added the metadata, you go on authoring. Later, when you check your work, the survey doesn't work properly. Eventually you discover the metadata is missing. It may take even longer to remember why: you didn't 'add' it before saving the page.

Where do I put metadata?

As of this writing (May 2009), the labeling is inconsistent. To add metadata to help make it easier to find a survey, start at the "Properties" button on the survey's home page. To add metadata for a question group so that the question group appears for some respondent pools but not others, start with the "edit question group" button.

Moving, Copying and Pasting of Questions and Elements

There is no "move" button currently in Flashlight Online. There are some options to reorder elements within a question, questions within a page, and pags within a qusetion group. For all other moves,' you first need to copy a question or an element,, then paste it in a new location, and then, if all is well, delete the original.

You can't (yet) copy pages or question groups, only questions and elements.

When copying a question from one survey to another (and from one browser window to another), you first click the 'copy' button. Problem: a ‘paste question’ button doesn’t appear in the second browser window. Make sure you 'refresh' the second browser page. The paste button should then appear.

If you're pasting an element from one place to another, the destination must already have a question. If there isn't one, create it. Then the 'paste' button will appear.
