This is a term given to any software created with the specific purpose of harming or otherwise detrementing a computer system. Common examples are worms, trojans, and e-mailers. Do not open any e-mail attachments from anyone you do not trust very well, and even then only if you are reasonably sure they are not infected with an e-mail virus pretending to be them.

It is your responsibility as a user of the University’s network to keep your computer secure and free of viruses. This includes keeping your antivirus software updated and performing regular antivirus scans. If you need an antivirus program one can be found at http://www.scs.wsu.edu/sav/. Additionally downloading the latest security patches for your computer will prevent many viruses and hackers from compromising your computer. Should your computer become infected your computer’s network connection could be shut off until it can be cleaned and patched by our staff.
