Enabling Symantec Antivirus Auto Protection and Auto Scanning

Symantec Antivirus (SAV) is offered to Washington State University students and faculty free of charge. It provides an easy to install layer of protection to your machine that is both powerful and well-integrated into your operating system. However, enabling the following two options can increase the functionality of the software and ensure that your machine is protected against all possible threats. SAV Auto Protection protects your computer against Real-time threats while setting up an Automatic scan can keep constant tabs on possible threats - ensuring the maximum functionality of your machine. The following directions apply both to Windows XP and Windows Vista.
Enabling Auto Protection
- Open Symantec Antivirus by clicking on the Start bar, and then browsing through your "All Programs" until you find the Symantec Client Security folder.
- Click on the Symantec Antivirus program.
- Expand the Configure menu by clicking on the "+" symbol and then click on "File System Auto-Protect".
- Make sure that "Enable Auto-Protect" is selected and that the rest of the options are as shown.
Enabling Auto Scanning
- Open Symantec Antivirus by clicking on the Start bar, and then browsing through your "All Programs" until you find the Symantec Antivirus folder.
- Expand the Scheduled Scans menu by clicking on the "+" symbol and then click on "New Scheduled Scan".
- Select the form of scan that you would like to schedule. Normally, the full scan is the most commonly used - especially if you can schedule the scan for when your computer is inactive.
- If you like, you can add a title and a special description.
- Select a time where your computer will be inactive but left on at a regular basis. Times during the night work well if you keep your machine on most of the time as well as more convenient times such as during class.
- Click next and then click save. Your machine is now configured to scan automatically at the scheduled times. Your machine is one step closer to being as secure as possible.
