Finding a physical address in OS X

Finding the physical address in Macintosh OS X is different, depending on the version of the operating system you are using.

Mac OS X 10.3 and higher

  1. From the Apple Menu, select "System Preferences" View
  2. Select the "Network" icon View


  • For the Ethernet (wired) MAC address:
  1. Select "Built-in Ethernet" from the "Show" Pop-up menu View
  2. Select the "Ethernet" tab View
  3. The number next to Ethernet ID is a 12 digit hexadecimal number separated by colons (in the form XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX). This is the computer's Ethernet (wired) MAC address


  • For the AirPort (wireless) MAC address:
  1. Select "AirPort" from the "Show" Pop-up menu View
  2. Select the "AirPort" tab View
  3. The number next to AirPort ID is a 12 digit hexadecimal number separated by colons (in the form XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX). This is the computer's AirPort (wireless) MAC address

Mac OS X 10.2 and lower

  1. From the Apple Menu, select "System Preferences".
  2. Select the "Network" icon


  • For the Ethernet (wired) MAC address:
  1. Select "Built-in Ethernet" from the "Show" Pop-up menu.
  2. Select the "TCP/IP" tab
  3. The number next to Ethernet ID is a 12 digit hexadecimal number separated by colons (in the form XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX). This is the computer's Ethernet (wired) MAC address.


  • For the AirPort (wireless) MAC address:
  1. Select "AirPort" from the "Show" Pop-up menu.
  2. Select the "TCP/IP" tab
  3. The number next to AirPort ID is a 12 digit hexadecimal number separated by colons (in the form XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX). This is the computer's AirPort (wireless) MAC address.
