Sun Java Runtime Environment Errors

Some users have reported problems using Blackboard CE with Microsoft Windows and some versions of the Sun Java Runtime Environment (JRE).

Possible causes include using an incompatible version of Sun JRE or having multiple versions of Sun JREs installed. Some users have found that their problems are resolved after uninstalling all versions of Sun JRE from their computers, and then reinstalling Sun JRE.

Updating your Java Runtime Environment (JRE) - windows

  1. From the Start menu, select Settings, Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Locate all versions of Sun Java, JRE, or JVM.
  4. For each version, click Change/Remove and follow the onscreen instructions.
  5. Download Sun JRE for Windows from this URL http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp
  6. To install the JRE, accept the license agreement and follow the online and onscreen instructions.

After installing the JRE and rebooting your computer, do not download updates for the JRE. Disable automatic checking for Java updates:

  1. From the Start menu, select Settings, Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Java Plug-in.
  3. Click the Update tab.
  4. Clear the checkbox next to Check for Updates Automatically.
  5. Click Apply.
  6. Click the "x" to close the Java Plug-in Control Panel window.

Clearing the Java cache – Windows

Only complete this step if you still have problems in Blackboard CE after the above java removal and reinstallation.

  2. Log off from your computer.
  3. Log back on to your computer.
  4. From the start menu, Go to the Control Panel | Java.
  5. At the bottom of the window look for Temporary Internet Files.
  6. Click on the button Delete Files.
  7. Delete the temporary files
  8. Make sure Downloaded Applets, Downloaded Applications, and Other File are all checked.
  9. Click OK to proceed.
  10. Close the control panel
  11. Reopen your browser and test

Macintosh

Java for Macintosh is detailed at this URL http://developer.apple.com/java/

This tip has been helpful to some who have experienced Safari/Java issues:

  • Go to /Applications/Utilites/Java/Java 1.3.1 Plugin Settings and empty the cache.
  • Go to /Applications/Utilites/Java/Java 1.4.2 Plugin Settings and empty the cache.
  • Go to /Applications/Utilities/Java J2SE5.0/Java Preferences. In the top section set it to use 5.0 and in the bottom section drag J2SE to the top. Save the settings.

This prevents Safari from using earlier Java versions for applets that are compatible with the later version.
