WSU mySite
A WSU mySite is a personal information management tool for students, faculty and staff, attached to MyWSU. This system includes a customizable, private personal page, document storage, a public page for sharing, and an unlimited number of modifiable sub-pages. Subsites can be used to create electronic portfolios or for team collaborations.
Update to SharePoint 2007
In June 2007 the SharePoint software behind the WSU mySite will be updated. SharePoint 2007 update will include an upgrade to Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS). All currently active mySites will be converted to the new 2007 version of the software.
Outage time for the update - June 8th 5 pm to June 11th 8 am
The date for this update is June 8th 5 pm to June 11th 8 am.
New and improved features of mySites
- Personal Blogs are now available as part of mySites. If you create subsites of your mySite (for example, for team collaboration), each subsite can have its own blog.
- Personal Wikis are now available as part of mySites. If you create subsites of your mySite (for example, for team collaboration), each subsite can have its own wiki.
- New Colleague functions lets you identify, link to, and track the mySites of your collaborators.
- Better support for non-Microsoft browsers such as Firefox.
- Easier navigation between sites and pages with breadcrumbs and tree views that show you where you are on the site and where you might like to go.
- A Top Navigation Bar with page tabs for quick navigation.
- Document library tree views help you navigate libraries in the same way you navigate the folders and files on your desktop.
- Settings and options are now easier to find and use.
- Two-level Recycle Bin! Deleting an item from a document library or list will sent your item to a site-level recycle bin. When you delete the item from this recycle bin, it is sent to a site administrator's recycle bin, where you can request recovery by the site administrator if needed.
- Improved Calendar with richer calendar views, expanded support for recurring events, and all-day events.
- The Site Directory automatically creates a site map and presents it in an easy-to-use format. The enhanced directory now includes the option to scan for changed or deleted links to external content.
- When you ask for an email alert when an item has changed, the email now contains more information about changes to the item.
- Anonymous access: You can enable a subsite for access without a login. (Learn more)
- Rights-trimmed interface: Users are only allowed to see the features that they have the rights to use. The old SharePoint informed users they were not allowed to perform a function only after they clicked its link.
- Document libraries and lists now support item level permissions. This means that you can determine for each individual item who can view it and who can modify it. Previously, all items in the same list or library had the same permissions setting.
Existing mySites will be migrated
We are using Microsoft's process for converting mySites from the SharePoint 2003 to the SharePoint 2007 format. This process enables these sites to enjoy the benefits of SharePoint 2007, but it results in some cosmetic changes and some functional changes.
"Private View" is now "My Home"
- The "Private" view is now called "My Home". This page contains information "FOR you", such as a list of documents authored by you in SharePoint sites, and (if you wish) a view of your calendar on the WSU Exchange server. This is the page you first see when you log in to mysite.wsu.edu.
- "Themes" (sets of colors and backgrounds) from 2003 are not migrated to 2007. If you set a theme on your 2003 MySite, it will revert to Microsoft's default theme in 2007. You may wish to change to the new "Washington State University '07" theme, or another one of the new 2007 themes:
- click on the "Site Actions" drop-down near the top-left corner of the page
- click on "Site Settings"
- Under the "Look and Feel" heading, click on "Site Theme"
- Choose a theme; a preview is shown on the left side of the page
- Click "Apply".
- Click the "My Home" tab to return to the My Home page.
- MIGRATION ISSUE
- MySites which had the "Washington State University" theme on the old SharePoint 2003 server now display with the default look (blue and buff colors). When you go to choose a Site Theme, it appears that "Washington State University '07" is selected. If you click "Apply", the site gets a mixed appearance, some in crimson-and-gray and some in blue-and-buff.
- FIX
- Apply another theme first, then go back and apply "Washington State University '07". You should see all crimson-and-gray on your MySite.
- "My Links" is available as a drop-down menu at the upper-right corner of "My Home", rather than as a list in the body of the page.
- We have eliminated most WSU-only features that were on the "Private" view; they are no longer required in SharePoint 2007.
"Public View" is now "My Profile"
- The "Public" view is now called "My Profile". The profile page contains information "ABOUT you" that you want to share with other users, such as your WSU directory entry, and documents, workspaces, and links you wish to share. The profile page also shows your most recent shared documents displayed per site, your colleagues and the sites of which you are a member. Items on the My Profile page are not listed for visitors unless the visitor is permitted to view the actual item; so this is a good "first stop" for visitors to your site.
- As in SharePoint 2003, the theme of this page is set by the site administrator, and can't be customized by individuals.
