Upload a Teamsite Template to a Gallery (SharePoint 2003)
From ctowiki
| This page has not been reviewed for accuracy with SharePoint 2007, it reflects SharePoint 2003 information. |
The design of a sub-site in SharePoint (e.g., WSU mySite or myClass) is controlled by a template. Some templates are pre-installed in the SharePoint site, others can be uploaded to a parent site by the site owner and then used to create the subsite. This page provides context and guidance for thinking about uploading teamsite templates.

Contexts
Portfolio
All eligible users at WSU can have a WSU mySite (About WSU mySite), and within that site can create sub-sites for collaboration and/or self-presentation, e.g., portfolios.
Classes
All instructional staff at WSU can request a myClass site be created for their course (see About myClass sites) and within that space the instructor can create sub-sites for student teams, portfolios, or other activties. For more information or consulting help, please contact CTLT with your request.
Other Team Sites
Other SharePoint sites also can have sub-sites created within them, and those sites can also be created by similar methods. The topic is too general to address at greater length here.
Procedure
Begin by entering the location (WSU mySite, myClass, or other) where the subsite is to be created. Prior to attempting to create a sub-site to this space, upload the template.
Access the Site Template Gallery
Click Site Settings from the toolbar and under Administration, click Go to Site Administration. Scroll down to Site Collection Galleries and click Manage site template gallery.
Upload Template
Click Upload Template and navigate to the template to be uploaded. Note the caution on malicious code, be sure you know and trust the source of the template you are uploading.
Create a Sub-site
Click Home in the top toolbar and proceed to create a sub-site. The procedure for this varies with the nature of the home:
WSU mySite
On the mySite Private view, click the title of My Workspace Sites or follow the instructions found on that view under ePortfolio Info. When creating the new sub-site, choose the template uploaded in the preceeding step when requested.

Delete a Teamsite Template
If you no longer want a template that you previously uploaded, you can delete it by following the procedure above the access the Template Gallery and using Edit' to access the Delete function. Note: if you created a teamsite from a template and then delete the template, now harm will be done to the team site. Once created, sites are independent of their templates. Similarly, deleting a team site will not delete the corresponding template.
