Setting up a VPN dialer for Windows Mobile PDAs

These instructions were created using a Dell Axim with Windows Mobile 2003. Your system may vary greatly from the images shown below.
Before you setup the MS VPN client on your PDA:
You must have a valid WSU NetworkID or Wireless Guest Account.

1. Tap on the icon to bring up the Connectivity window. Then tap on the Settings selection to bring up the Settings screen. In the Settings screen, tap on the Connections icon. |
2. In the Settings/Connections window, tap on the Advanced tab at the bottom of the screen.
Next, tap on the Exceptions button half way down the screen.
3. Tap on Add new URL...
In the Work URL: box, type *.*, then tap the OK at the top, right corner of the screen.
4. Tap on the Select Networks button.
Then, in the lower part of the screen below the 'My Work Network' entry, tap on the Edit... button.
5. Tap on the VPN tab at the bottom part of the screen. Then, tap on the New... button.
In the Settings/Make New Connection window...
- type in a Name (we picked WSU vpn)
- type a Host name/IP of vpn-gateway.wsu.edu
- select the PPTP radio button.
Tap the Next button to continue.
6. In the Settings/WSU vpn window...
- type in your WSU Network ID
- type in your password
- optional - type in your Domain
Then, tap on the Advanced... button.
In the Settings/Advanced window...
- uncheck the Use software compression entry
- uncheck the Use IP header compression entry
Tap the OK at the top, right hand side of the screen.
7. Tap the Finish button, followed by a number of OK taps and a final X tap until you finally return to your initial screen.
You are now finished configuring your PDA. Follow the next step below to test out your PDAs VPN connection.
8. Connecting with your VPN client...
Tap on the wireless icon to bring up the Connectivity pop up window. Tap on Connect VPN to begin the vpn connection process. It will take a few moments for the VPN software to connect, then the pop up window will disappear if it is successful.
Once connected, you will be able to use your web browser and other internet applications to communicate on the network.
Don't forget to Disconnect your VPN session when you are finished!
You can just tap the button on the lower, right edge of the Axim case to disable your wireless and you will see the "Wireless Disable" message window...
Possible Errors:
If un-successful, you may see an error message similar to the image displayed to the right...
IF you see this Cannot Connect message window, please make sure you have your correct WSU NetworkID and password in your configuration. Also make sure you have the host of vpn-gateway.wsu.edu called out.
