Managing Permissions on MySite

From ctowiki

Jump to: navigation, search

This page is updated for SharePoint 2007.

If you would like to see Student Computing Services add content, you can request additions to this page.

By default, only you can add to or change your MySite and the items within it. Only you can see the items on your "My Home" page and in your "Private Documents" library. Anyone who has a WSU network ID can view the shared items of your MySite, including your "My Profile" page and items in your "Shared Documents" library.

You can restrict your MySite so that fewer people can view shared items, or you can "open it up" so that anyone on the Internet can view shared items without logging in. You can mix and match, sharing some items widely and restricting others. However, you need to carefully check your work to ensure that the results you get are what you intend.

Summary of Best Practices

To avoid unintended results, we recommend:

  1. Leave the defaults in place for the main "MySite" and the built-in "Shared Documents" and "Private Documents" libraries.
  2. If you have a particular set of people who will be viewing or changing a set of documents and lists, create a "subsite" of your MySite and make those people members with the appropriate permission levels.

Managing Access to MySites

Other Users and Your Home Page

Other users cannot see your "My Home" page. Think of this as a "for-me" page that you can customize with information you can use in your daily life.

Other Users and Your Profile Page

When other users browse to "https://mysite.wsu.edu/personal/yournetworkid", they see your "My Profile" page. Think of this as an "about-me" page that introduces you to other people. It also can include web parts that show others the items in your MySite that are shared with them.
