What do I do if my transcribed files do not have punctuation?

By default, Dragon Naturally Speaking only inserts punctuation when specifically told to, making the files you transcribe one long run-on sentence. There is an option to automatically add commas and sentences to your transcriptions. To enable it, open the DragonBar and click on Tools -> Options. In the Formatting tab, check the option “Automatically add commas and periods” and press OK.

When I transcribe my files, I receive an error: “Naturally Speaking has reached the maximum amount of speech data that can be saved. You may continue dictating, but some speech playback may become unavailable”

This error is reached when Dragon runs out of temporary space while transcribing (about 26 minutes in). You can increase the temporary file size from the default 40mb to a maximum 120mb, which should allow for ~70 minutes of recording. You can set that option by opening the DragonBar and clicking on Tools-> Options. In the Miscellaneous tab, change the “Disk space reserved for recording” to something higher.

What can I do to improve dictation?

  • Try to keep the microphone at the same distance at all times
  • Make sure that the audio is not too loud. “Peaking” the recorder will cause distortion and keep from making an accurate transcription. If recordings are too loud, move the microphone further away.
  • Keep background noise to a minimum
  • If you change recorders, you should retrain your recorder
