Using SharePoint
Error Messages When Opening the Rich Text Editor
You can create styled text (fonts, bold, italic, colors, etc.) in a "Basic Web Page" or a "Content Editor Web Part" using Microsoft's Rich Text Editor, if you are using the Internet Explorer browser on a Windows system. However, opening the Rich Text Editor can cause an error if you are using Internet Explorer 7. Here's a description of the error and how to fix it.
"Script Error" or "Rich Text Editor cannot be opened."
There are three ways that you can "invoke" the Rich Text Editor:
- when you create a Basic Web page,
- when you click the "Edit Content" link in the header of a Basic Web Page,
- When you select "Modify Shared Web Part" in a Content Editor Web Part, and click the "Rich Text Editor" button in the tool pane that opens.
In all these cases, the Rich Text Editor is supposed to open automatically. However, if you are using Internet Explorer 7 (IE7), you may see a "script error" message, or a message that the "Rich Text Editor cannot be opened."
The fix: Add the SharePoint site to you "Local Intranet" Zone
We believe the problem is caused by the fact that the script that provides rich text editing is not sufficiently "trusted" by IE7. We have fixed the problem by upgrading the trust level associated with the SharePoint server.
- Log in to the SharePoint site (mysite.wsu.edu, myclass.wsu.edu, or other SharePoint site).
- In an IE7 window, find the "Tools" dropdown near the top right-hand side of the window. Click on it to display the options. The bottom-most option is "Internet Options". Select it. The
"Internet Options" box is displayed with several tabs across the top.
- Select the "Security" tab. Icons for the various IE7 security zones ("Internet", "Local Intranet",
"Trusted Sites"...) will be displayed.
- Select the "Trusted Sites" zone. Click the "Sites" button just below the icons.
The "root" URL for the SharePoint site will be displayed; this is just the "https://" prefix and the internet name of the server. Click "Add" to add this site to the "Trusted Sites" list.
- Click Close, then OK.
Rich Text Editor is a Pop-Up Window
Modern browsers have "pop-up blockers" that prevent annoying add windows from "popping up" when you visit sites. However, not all pop-up windows are bad; in fact, the Rich Text Editor is a pop-up window. To use it, you may also need to set your browser's pop-up blocker to permit pop-ups from the SharePoint site. See Blocking and Allowing Browser Pop-Ups for instructions.
