Tips when taking Blackboard Learning System CE exams or quizzes online.

  1. Before taking any quiz, check the browser you are using to take the quiz. Go to URL http://elearning.wsu.edu and choose “check browser” from the menu at the left. Make sure the browser passes all checks, especially the pop-up blocker check and the java check. All pop-up blockers must be disabled or set to allow pop-ups from elearning.wsu.edu
  2. Never use the back button to navigate between questions or back to any other course window when taking a quiz. This also applies to Blackboard Learning System in general. Use the menu or breadcrumb trail to navigate within a course.
  3. Remove or disable special search bars in your browser. Special search bars added to the browser such as Google, Yahoo companion, Alta Vista or mySearch, may interfere with quizzes. If you do not want to remove your search bar, then download another browser you can use when taking Blackboard Learning System quizzes. Please check the list of supported browsers from the left hand menu on the Blackboard Learning System login page at URL http://elearning.wsu.edu.
  4. Never use a scroll wheel on a mouse to scroll down through a set of quiz questions. Scroll wheels can inadvertently change answers on a quiz. Use the window scroll bar not the scroll wheel.
  5. Do not resize the quiz window in the middle of the quiz, especially on short answer or essay questions or you will lose all your text.
  6. Be sure to accept the Java security certificates from the pop up window when you log in. Click "Yes" or "Always" or "Trust" to accept the certificate so your browser will work correctly with eLearning. For additional information, see Troubleshooting Java certificate problems in Blackboard.
  7. Choose Save Answer as you go along through the quiz rather than choosing only save all at the end.
  8. If you consistently have trouble and you have followed steps 1 to 7 above, please check that you do not have more than one version of Java installed. Below are instructions for windows OS to remove all java versions, install the latest supported version. If you have trouble after removing all java and installing the latest version you may also have to clear the Java cache. This should only be done if you have tried all the above steps first and still experience problems.

Updating your Java Runtime Environment

See this wiki page for how to update your Java or clear the Java cache.
