Adding Web Parts from the Web Part Gallery in mySite

Web Parts Briefly Explained

Web Parts are panels that can be added to web part pages in mySite to display information. Your "MyHome" page is a web part page, so you can add web parts to it. There are many types of web parts; each one displays a different kind of information, or information from a different source. For example, the Content Editor web part enables you to enter and display your own "styled" text, with bold, italic, hyperlinks, and so on. The Image web part enables you to include an image in a mySite page, whether the image is stored in your MySite or elsewhere on the Web.

SharePoint Help offers this description of web parts, and this how-to for adding web parts to pages.

Workaround for missing content editor and image web parts

Some newly created SharePoint 2007 mySites may not have the Image web part or Content Editor web part in the list of available web parts. This prevents you from adding these useful web parts to pages in your MySite. To add these web parts to the list of available web parts for your mySite, please follow the steps below. (Screen shots of the steps are below.)

  1. Login (http://mysite.wsu.edu) and navigate to the main page of your mySite, you should be on the "My Home" tab.
  2. At the top right hand side of the screen, click on the button labeled "Site Actions".
  3. From the "Site Actions" menu that drops down, choose "Site Settings".
  4. In the middle of the screen look for the label called "Galleries".
  5. Under Galleries choose the item called "Web Parts".
  6. On the Web Part Gallery screen, you will see a long list of parts. At the top of that list in the tool bar look for the item called "New".
  7. Choose "New" and you will see a screen called "Web Part Gallery: New Web Parts".
  8. On the "New Web Parts" screen, search, using a Ctrl+F (Command+F on a Mac), for the text "ContentEditorWebPart" or "ImageWebPart". This text appears in boxes on the left of the screen.
  9. Check the box to the left of either of these web parts and then scroll back to the top of the screen and choose "Populate Gallery" to add these web parts to your mySite.
  10. If the action above produces an error message, repeat the steps and on step 9, before clicking "Populate Gallery" click the box to "Overwrite if web part exists?". Then click Populate. If the problem persists, contact [support.wsu.edu].

Once you have added these Web parts, they will appear in the list of choices when editing your page and you can add them to pages in your mySite.
